Laboratory Internship in Chemical Analysis
HTC Summer Intern Program - 2025
Scope
The graduate level internship at the HTC is designed as a supervised work program under the guidance of an HTC Leader who functions as a mentor. This setting allows the student intern to experience chemistry in a meaningful, real world setting with the opportunity for excitement of discovery. The candidate intern must be working towards an advanced chemistry or engineering degree in order to qualify for this HTC program.
Initial work at the HTC will begin with basic analyses of carbon black in a practical hands-on laboratory setting utilizing ASTM methodologies including tests such as iodine absorption number, oil absorption number, and nitrogen surface area, plus the intern will learn the theory of the tests in a classroom setting to include the calculations and statistics associated with the test methods, and elementary summary report-writing. As the student intern becomes proficient in those areas, he/she will advance into intermediate and advanced test methodologies which will include instrumental analysis, feedstock analysis, and eventually into rubber testing and other advanced and sophisticated techniques depending upon the project level needs which vary from year to year. More details on this development plan will be shared with the student candidate in a separate discussion.
The student intern is expected to follow all safety, health, and environmental protocols at the HTC.
If the opportunity arises, future summer assignments will focus on a gradual transition towards independent laboratory assignments up to and including a self-directed project, which is encouraged as the student gains confidence and is able to work with minor supervision.
Final Presentation
At the end of each 3-month summer session, the student intern will develop, create, and present a final presentation to co-workers and the Leadership Team.
Mentor
An HTC Scientist will mentor the student intern with the Laboratory Manager and the Director of Technology providing backup coverage.
